LGBTQ+

pride in practice

The University Medical Group is a practice that supports the health and wellbeing of patients from the LGBTQ+ community. We are delighted to announce that we have recently been awarded the Gold Pride in Practice Award from the  LGBT Foundation for excellence in LGBTQ+ healthcare.  As part of this award, we have made some changes to improve our patient care.

These include new consultation appointments for patients who are transgender or who have gender dysphoria with Jasmine, the Physician Assistant who has a special interest in this area and who has completed additional training. As part of this new patient consultation, we can arrange blood tests, basic observations, signposting to services and complete your referral onto a GIC. We also offer opportunistic Hepatitis and HIV screening tests, contraception and information about inclusive cancer screening if needed. We now have a link with the LGBT foundation which means we can access any specific resources you may need or support groups if we do not have the information already on our dedicated LGBT website page.

We have waiting room posters for the LGBT support phone line and have introduced a new additional transgender staff policy to help ensure staff and patients are protected and supported at the surgery. When you register at the practice and during any consultation we may ask you to provide your sexual orientation so that we can ensure we are providing appropriate advice and inclusive care to all our patients. We now also have a dedicated LGBT team including Doctors, PA, Pharmacist and Admin staff who are supported by our Nursing Team to ensure you receive co-ordinated, safe inclusive care.

Reading Based Organisations

Please be aware that we are no longer able to accept Shared Care Prescribing for Gender Affirming Hormones with Gender GP.  This is due to concerns about the quality and safety of the care provided by this service.  This will not affect patients who have existing Shared Care Agreements in place.  As it can be overwhelming to select a private provider whilst on an NHS waiting list the following are resources to help guide decision making:  Specialist UK gender clinics - Gender Construction Kit (genderkit.org.uk), Choosing a gender service – TransActual.  We continue to accept Shared Care Prescribing with other private UK based clinics if recommendations are safe and in line with NHS service recommendations.  If you have any queries regarding this please contact Michaela Pitt (m.pitt2@nhs.net).

The Florey Unit is a local NHS clinic which will provide you with accurate information, confidential care and support for all aspects of your sexual health.
