Information about meningitis

All students are advised to ensure they are vaccinated against meningococcal strains A, C, W, and Y (MenACWY) before starting University, as they are at higher risk. MenACWY protects against these strains. There are other strains such as meningococcal B and viral causes. Vigilance for meningitis symptoms is crucial, particularly due to the risks of MenB. 

Key Vaccination and Health Advice:

• MenACWY Vaccine: Ensure you have received this vaccine, typically offered in school (Year 9/10), before coming to university.  If you are unsure, check with your school or your personal records. If you have not had the vaccination or do not know if you have and are unable to find out and you are under 25, you are eligible.
• Meningitis B (MenB): The MenB vaccine is not routinely given to teenagers in the UK, though it is highly recommended to be aware of symptoms. Children over the age of 2 are not eligible for the meningitis B vaccination.  
• Symptoms to Watch: High temperature, cold hands/feet, vomiting, confusion, muscle/joint pain, cold-like/flu symptoms, a non-blanching rash which does not fade when a clear glass is pressed against it, stiff neck, dislike of bright lights, and severe sleepiness.
• Action:  If you feel rapidly unwell with these symptoms, do not call or attend the practice, call 999 or go to the nearest A&E department.
• Prevention: Avoid sharing drinks, vapes, bottles, or cutlery to reduce transmission.
